The tickets for the next cosplay convention are booked, the weekend is approaching, but the weather app is showing over 30°C. And you're wearing a wig and several layers of costume?

No problem!

Here are 6 tips on how to "keep a cool head" at conventions in summer and an insider tip against the smell:

1. cold shower & costume choice

Acclimatise your body by taking a cold shower. Put on make-up in a minimal costume or bathrobe first. Choose a cosplay that is appropriate for the weather or create a "summer version". Don't forget deodorant!

2. sun cream

Apply sun cream to all visible areas of skin. Use special sun cream for the face or day cream with a sun protection factor. You can get rid of unwanted shine by powdering. Even if you are indoors most of the time, protect yourself on the way to the convention.

3. mini electric fan, fan, umbrella & water spray

These little helpers fit in every bag and keep you cool. A matching parasol can even complement your cosplay.

4. drink a lot

Hydration is essential! Favour water ( jazzed up with lemon slices if necessary), cold unsweetened tea or fruit spritzers. Avoid coffee, energy drinks and alcohol, as these affect the body's circulation and water balance. Ice-cold drinks can cause stomach cramps.

5. stay in the shade, near water or in air-conditioned areas

You are probably already doing this. Pro tip: It's always a little milder at fountains and ponds.

6. know your limits & look out for others

Look out for symptoms in yourself and others such as increased body temperature, hot and dry skin, rapid pulse, tiredness, exhaustion, cramps, vomiting, dizziness, confusion and hallucinations.

If there are signs of heat stroke:

  • Tell someone.

  • Rest in the shade or in a quiet corner of the con building.

  • Keep your upper body elevated.

  • Take off your wig and undress as much as possible.

  • Drink enough.

  • If you feel dizzy, put your legs up.

  • Place damp cloths on your head and neck.

At many cons, there are also paramedics or first-aid staff on the go who you can contact. A cool cosplay is not worth a heat stroke!

Insider tip: Airing out & vodka spray

After the con: Air out and spray your costumes with vodka spray to remove odours. The high-proof alcohol kills the bacteria responsible for the odour. This is a tip I learnt in my role as a costume assistant in the theatre!

Have fun at your next summer convention! :)
